How Do We See Others?
See People As Jesus Does
Philippians 2:3-5
Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. (4) Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. (5) Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus
Neighborhood Walk Example
What a perfect example of Nick's mom being willing to take small steps in just reaching out to her neighbor and God working in ways that she didn't know would happen. This really plays into the theme of past sermons/topics (Philippians, Be Anxious for Nothing, Holy Spirit, Abraham) of being willing to take action and look to God to open doors or close doors.
Lighthouse Keeper Example
A visitor to a lighthouse said to the keeper, "Aren't you afraid to live here with the storms and high winds constantly lashing the walls?"
"Oh, we have to be more concerned about those out on the sea," the man replied. "We think only of having our lamps burning brightly and keeping the reflectors clear so that those in greater danger may be saved."
Mark 10:45
For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many
Other Thoughts
We can sometimes think that counting others more significant than ourselves is a rule that we should follow. While we are directed to love others, I would suggest it's bigger than something we should do 'because'. As we have been talking about previous messages, it's becoming more evident that following this direction is actually going to bring about Peace and Joy. For instance, does arguing and holding a grudge bring us peace and joy? Does it make us feel better allowing someone to go first in a line vs. fighting to see who gets served next?
