Why Focus?

"What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us."

― A.W. Tozer (The Knowledge of the Holy)

How we view God will have a significant impact on our relationship with God and others. A balanced understanding of God's attributes is key to an improved view of God that will strongly and directly impact the level of JOY and PEACE we can enjoy. This assertion is summarized by two key points. The first point involves us better understanding what the Bible tells us about who God is. The second point is fully trusting what the Bible states about God in all aspects without emphasizing some of God's attributes and minimizing others.

Do we mainly focus on God's holiness and justice?

This perspective will result in feeling insignificant and alone. This unbalanced focus on some of God's attributes can effect us both in the good times or bad times. However, it seems to especially effect us when things don't work 'our way'. God doesn't answer our prayers in the way I think He should, so He doesn't care. He allows things to happen in my life that I don't like, so He doesn't care. Terrible things happen to others, so He doesn't care. This perspective will result in the losing out on the comfort that comes from know our heavenly father wants the very best for us, the 'best for us' is just different than what we perceive as being the 'best for us'. This perspective will not bring us lasting JOY and PEACE.

Do we mainly focus on God love, compassion, and patience?

A focus on this part of God's character will leave us questioning God because this focus tends to be God wanting me to be happy and that my happiness is based on my circumstances. Therefore, when God is allowing things to happen that don't make us happy or when our prayers are not answered 'YES', we can tend towards questioning God's sovereignty, omnipotence and omniscience.  This perspective will not bring us lasting JOY and PEACE.

Do we mainly focus on God's omniscience, omnipotence and sovereignty?

If we focus on God's omniscience, sovereignty, omnipotence and start to question His ways based on a human perspective, we will end up questioning God. This will not bring us lasting JOY and PEACE.

Do we view God as what we think God should be?

If we focus on our view of what God should be, we will tend to have a shifting view of God that is not based on faith, but based on human perspective which changes like the wind. This view tends to shift with man's perspective for the current times vs. God's unchanging ways. This will not bring us lasting JOY and PEACE.

Do we have a balanced view of God?

A balance view of all of God's attributes brings about lasting JOY and PEACE. The release of control that only comes when we give every aspect of our lives and future to his control understanding that God is in complete control and wants the best for us. A deep faith in the balanced view of God, brings about a faith that God's ways are best for us which brings about JOY and PEACE. Therefore, in any situation God is in control and can work on HIS purpose which will be good for us.

Happy Teens
Joy

Joy that can only come from having complete faith that God is all powerful, sovereign, and all knowing and wants what is best for us. As it says in Romans 8:28: 'And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.'

Peaks Above Clouds
Peace

Peace that goes beyond circumstances and comes from knowing that God is in control and he is for us, not against us.  As it says in Philippians 4:6-7: 'Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.'
